Scopus Citation Analysis

To create a citation for an article published in Open Journal Systems (OJS) that complies with Scopus-indexed journal standards, you need to use an internationally recognized citation style. Scopus itself does not have an exclusive citation format; rather, it supports standard formats like APA, IEEE, or Harvard, depending on the guidelines of your target journal.

Here are the most common citation formats and examples used for OJS journal articles:

1. APA (American Psychological Association) 7th Edition

This format is most frequently used for journals in the social sciences, education, and natural sciences.

  • Format:

Author Last Name, Initials. (Publication Year). Title of article: Subtitle of article. Name of Journal, Volume(Issue), Page range. DOI or OJS URL

  • Example:

Siregar, B., & Wati, E. (2023). Performance analysis of algorithms on medical data. Journal of Computer Science, 12(2), 45-56. https://doi.org/10.xxxx/jik.v12i2.1234

2. IEEE Format

This format is the absolute standard for journals in engineering, computer science, and technology.

  • Format:

Author Initials. Last Name, "Title of article," Name of Journal, vol. Volume, no. Issue, pp. Page range, Month Year. DOI.

  • Example:

    B. Siregar and E. Wati, "Performance analysis of algorithms on medical data," Journal of Computer Science, vol. 12, no. 2, pp. 45-56, Oct. 2023. https://doi.org/10.xxxx/jik.v12i2.1234

3. Vancouver Format

This format is widely used in the medical and healthcare fields.

  • Format:

Author Last Name Initials. Title of article. Name of Journal. Publication Year;Volume(Issue):Page range.

How to Enable the Automatic Citation Feature in OJS

If you are a Journal Manager and want your OJS articles to provide an automatic citation block that can be downloaded (in RIS or BibTeX formats, which are compatible with Scopus and Mendeley), you must enable the following plugin in your OJS dashboard:

  1. Log in as a Journal Manager or Site Administrator.

  2. Navigate to Settings > Website > Plugins tab.

  3. Scroll down and look for the Block Plugins or Generic Plugins section.

  4. Find the plugin named Citation Style Language (for OJS 3.x versions).

  5. Check the box on the right to Enable the plugin.

  6. Click the blue arrow next to the plugin name, then select Settings. Here, you can configure the primary citation styles you want to display on the article page (e.g., APA, IEEE, or ACM).

By enabling this feature, readers can instantly copy the citation format or download a .ris file to import into their reference management software. This is crucial for improving your citation index in Scopus.
